“Learning is the difference between a job done and a job well done.”
- Curiosity – we are not testing or judging them; we are learning from them
- Neutrality – actively refuse to take sides
- Observation – pay attention to body language, tone of voice, repetition or avoidance
- Open Attitude – avoid assumptions, believe that anything is possible
- Adaptability – be smart, focus on the goal more than following exact instructions
- Communication – stay in touch with the team, don't let anyone worry about you
- Sensitivity – be aware of power dynamics especially, don't abuse your privilege
- Creativity – pay attention to unique attributes that help understand the interviewee better
- Clarity – make sure the questions are clear; take the time to explain whenever necessary
- Reflective – where are YOU in the conversation? Be aware of previous knowledge about the NGO and its members
- Freshness – try to build on what you've been learning, but remember that each new interview is a new person
